Web Content Management Systems (CMS) Overview

A Web Content Management System (WCM, WCMS, or Web CMS) is a content management system (CMS) application used to create, edit, and manage website content. It is used to manage and control a dynamic collection of Web material (XHTML/HTML documents and the associated images). A Web CMS facilitates content creation, content control, editing, and other necessary Web maintenance functions.

The beauty of CMS software is that it provides authoring and other tools designed to allow users with little knowledge of programming languages or markup languages to create and manage content relatively easily. We set it up for the client, and the client can then add, edit, or delete website content without having to call a web development company for assistance -- thus saving money.

Most content management systems use a database (often MySQL) to store content, metadata, or artifacts that might be needed by the system. The presentation layer or user interface (UI) displays the content to website visitors based on a set of templates. The administration of content management systems is typically achieved via back-end, browser-based interfaces.

Unlike most website building software, a web CMS allows non-technical users to make changes to a website with little or no training. Although a WCMS usually requires an experienced web developer to set up and add features and plugins, it is primarily a website maintenance tool for non-technical administrators.

The content management system resources we have included here lean toward using WordPress -- mainly because it is one of our favorites and we use it often. These content management resources are by no means comprehensive.
