Content Writing Tips: How to Write Quality Content for Your Website
It has long been said that "content is king". What this means is that the content on your website is one of the most important parts of your website, if not the most important aspect of it. This is because whilst a design which is easy-on-the-eye will draw a visitor in and leave a good first impression, it will be your content which will keep your visitor interested in your website and hopefully keep them coming back.
Hence it is recommended that you stick to the following tips as best as possible to improve the content on your website as best as possible:
- Good spelling and grammar is a necessity - since "content is king" (as explained above), it is very important that you don't make any spelling or grammar mistakes when writing your content. If you do make such mistakes, this may harm your website's credibility and put-off visitors from returning to your website. Clearly this isn't desirable, so be careful, re-read what you write, and eradicate as many spelling and grammar mistakes as possible.
- People scan content online, so make things easy for your visitors - text online is read very differently to content in a book. This is because the Human eye will - by default - scan text which appears on a computer monitor, meaning that the average visitor to your website won't read your content word for word. Hence it is important that you use features like bold, italics, headings and bullet point lists (like this list) to break up your content and highlight any important information to your visitor. Research has shown that a user will tend to simply read the first couple of lines of the first paragraph, and then scan read most of the rest of the page. So keep this in mind and make things easy for your visitors (and this will hopefully keep them coming back)
- Shorter paragraphs make reading your content much easier - since, as above, visitors scan read your content, keeping your paragraphs short (perhaps to 2-4 lines each) will break up your content. This will improve the chances of your visitors reading your content since a lot of short paragraphs are more accessible to read than a couple of longer paragraphs.
- Don't overload your paragraphs; stick to one idea each paragraph - the trick to writing is quite obviously not to confuse your reader. A great way of keeping things simple for your visitors is to keep to one idea or concept explanation per paragraph. For example, if you have too many ideas in one paragraph, a reader may get confused about the overall point you are trying to make in that paragraph. This also nicely ties in with the above "keep your paragraphs short" point; once you have made your point and explained it, start a new paragraph. This breaks things down nicely for your readers.
- Keep a good contrast in colors - this is more of a design choice than a content writing tip, however it is still a very important one. Ensure that the color of your text is chosen such that a high contrast is kept compared to the background color of the content's container cell. What this means is, for example, if you have a black background, use a white text color (or a light gray text color). Anything different may hurt the visitor's eyes, making it hard for them to read your content.
- Double check your work once you are finished writing it - as explained above, any spelling or grammar mistakes in your content will harm your credibility - both as a writer and your website's credibility also. Hence be sure to double check your work, and ask your friends and family to re-read if for you if needed. Whilst double checking your writing may seem monotonous, it is definitely worth it - any mistakes will not reflect well on you. So spend a few minutes re-reading your copy.
Hopefully the above tips will help you to write some better quality content for your website. The trick to online writing is essentially to make things as easy as possible for your readers and break things down into easier-to-read sections.
